the rap

1. intro - you're on holiday in hamburg. it's dusk in late june and you enter a soccer stadium to see a group of hard rock bands at a festival the name of which you can't pronounce.

2. two becks - beck and jeff beck get into a musical argument. beck thinks he wins. jeff let's him think that.

3. wichita groove - G, billy and jesse are rehearsing on a tuesday afternoon in february and jesse is caught in the snow a few miles away. billy has been working on this bass line and G tries the piano and offers a guitar solo. jesse arrives mid-toon.

4. elbow room - you're in a bar way south of market, say, down on valencia. the CBS orchestra has the night off from doing the bammies the night before and has joined the house band for a jam. it's twenty past, you order another tanqueray.

5. zero gravity - you're swimming in a pool, or skydiving over the desert, or being catapulted by a skyscraper's elevator, or lifted by a cresting wave in the ocean. flight attendants, please prepare for take-off.

6. paper or plastic - americans fill up shopping carts to overflow, then feel like we're helping the environment by picking the type of bag to shove it all in. ignorance is bliss.

7. tower of bond - 007 gets a horn section. or, tower of power hires vic flick.

8. red state - you're sitting on your front porch on a sticky night in huntsville. you hear your son's new age music coming from his bedroom, what they now call R&B coming from your daughter's open window, and the slide guitar gene's been practicing across the street.

9. leviticus - walls of sound build, then collapse under their own weight. not so much based on the third book of the old testament as on the SNL character of the same name played by rob riddle.

10. wonderworld - ever puzzle over how something so simple can be so beautiful? such as a cube viewed at the perfect angle, the symmetry of an orchid, the sound of a child's laugh, or the melody of a stevie wonder song.
